On Wednesday 2 May Miss Lusty and Mrs Tilsed took 18 very excited year 3 & 4 footballers to the St George’s Cup. Although it was a very wet start to the morning by the time they left for Portland, the sun was shining and everyone was looking to playing plenty of football.
Both teams played superbly and scored plenty of goals. Radipole B won 5 out of 6 games and were very unlucky to miss out on a place in the semi final by 1 goal.
On the adjacent pitch, Radipole A were undefeated in their 6 group matches and won several games in a very unusual way; Goalkeeper Thomas scored twice with long clearances which bounced directly into their opponent’s net.
Beechcroft A gave them a tough challenge in the semi final and took an early 2 goal lead. Radipole rallied strongly and scored two skillful goals to level the game, which meant the dreaded penalty shootout.
All 5 Radipole penalty takers scored whereas Beechcroft had 2 of theirs saved which meant a final against Atlantic Academy.
The final was tense and pretty even until Radipole took the lead with a well taken goal by Joe, who had just come on as a sub, before Dougie rounded off the final with a 2nd and decisive goal.
All the players showed great enthusiasm and sporting behaviour throughout the afternoon and both staff members were very pleased with the standard of football and team spirit demonstrated by both the children and their parents.
All 18 will be presented with their sports badges very soon and Mrs Tilsed hopes they will wear them everyday with pride.
